Water Wall-E

I want this for Christmas.

AQUA 2 is a robot which can swim, dive and move (not very gracefully) on land as well. He looks like a cross between Wall-E and Eva, but equipped with six independently controlled fins that allow him to move in a most peculiar way. So far it has been tested at depths of up to 120 feet.

AQUA 2 has both rear and forward facing video cameras, which are used both to guide it with hand gestures, and for surveying.

It is really cute. The only thing that freaks me out is that these things always end up used for military purposes... Please leave my water Wall-E alone!

Cousteau in a Hazmat Suit

Hazmat suits are amazing. They protect us from highly toxic environments.

To go in the ocean, all one needs is a bathing suit. Not even that. The best way to enjoy the ocean is in your birthday suit.

To see Fabien Cousteau diving in the Gulf with a Hazmat suit was profouldly disturbing. At the rate we are polluting our oceans one has to wonder whether it will be safe for our grandchildren to go in the ocean... without baby hazmat suits...

No Country for Ocean Nerds

Technology can help us connect to each other and to our environment. But overblown faith in technology can be fatal. Technology does not eliminate the responsibility for our actions, and does not replace wisdom.

While checking out the Deepwater Horizon ground zero on BlooSee I bumped into this horrific image of a burnt sperm whale.

At that moment I wished I had a heart of silicon, like my MacBook Pro. But on second thought I decided to allow myself to feel whatever I needed to feel. Maybe the best way to start this blog is by recognizing that honoring and protecting life should be the ultimate purpose of any technology.
